Handsome original antique color lithographed 1897 map of southern India, with decorative piano-key border, printed more than 125 years ago.

• The image area measures 26.7 x 39 cm [10½" x 15¼"], and the map was engraved by the Matthews-Northrup Company.



• The coverage area extends from the Gulf of Cambay to the southern tip of Ceylon, east to the mouths of the Ganges, with a large inset of the Straits Settlements of the Malay Peninsula, including Georgetown and Singapore.



• The map is drawn on a scale of 110 English miles to one inch, and it shows cities, towns, battle sites, railways, steamship routes, submarine cables, and ocean depths, with topography drawn in relief.



• Among the named places and features on the map are the Bombay Presidency, Nizam's Dominions, the Portuguese colonies of Goa and Daman, Mysore, Orissa, the Madras Presidency, Solapur, Secunderabad, the French colony of Pondicherry, and Thiruvananthapuram (spelled Trivandram on the map).



• An inset plan gives a closer look at Bombay and vicinity, including roads, forts, and the lunatic asylum and observatory at Kolaba Point.
