Up for sale is a NICE antique map of PARTIE ORIENTALE de l'Empire DE RUSSIE, Extrait de l'Atlas Ruffien et d'autres Cartes (Eastern Part of the Russian Empire).
By Rigobert Bonne - Mtre. de Mathemat? - A. Paris - 1771.
R. Boone (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th centure. He became the Royal Cartography to France in 1773 in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. His work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and 18th centure towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic.
The map measures approximately 15 x 20 1/2 inches, including the border area. The actual map area is approximatley 12 1/2 x 17 inches. The map is beautifully hand-colored and blank on the reverse side. There is a crease down the midde from where it was originally bound. Unfortunately, I do not know in what Atlas it was published in.
Map is generally in Good- Condition. There is wear and browning to the map. Some tears and chips around the edges. The corners are chipped and creased, or torn. Several creases in the map from where it was folded wrong. Heavier staining (possibly water damage) on the left edge, which extends into the map area. There is a crease across the middle from where it was originally bound. Some light foxing, too. There are other dings here and there, as well.
This map is a great piece of history! It will look very nice when framed. Map will ship flat.
