Sgt Plt George F. ‘Buzz’ Beurling became Canada’s highest-scoring ace of World War II, claiming 30 and one shared destroyed enemy aircraft, one probably destroyed enemy aircraft, and nine damaged, between 1 May 1942 and 30 December 1943. All bar two of these were claimed during 1942, and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Distinguished Flying Medal twice within the space of four months. He was flying Spitfire Vb, W3383, EB-G, when he claimed his very first victory, a destroyed Fw 190 in the Channel off Calais with 41 Squadron on 1 May 1942.
