BAR REVERSE: BLANK; STURDY PIN BACK WITH OPEN CATCH.

BAR SECURED TO MEDAL BY TWO SETS OF 6 CHAIN LINKS

MEDAL OBVERSE: IN THE SHAPE OF A CROSS PATTÉE ALÉSÉE ARRONDIE WITH INSCRIPTION ON EACH ARM (STARTING AT LEFT) "SPANISH" "AMERICAN" "WAR" "1898; CENTER MEDALLION WITH STATE HERALDIC ARMS ENCIRCLED BY BOWED WREATH.

MEDAL REVERSE: BLANK.

HANGS 95 MM IN LENGTH; MEDAL JEWEL IS 50 MM ARM TO ARM

SOME EXTANT MEDALS HAVE "J.K. DAVISON, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA" STAMPED ON THE BACK. THIS AND MOST OTHER SURVIVING EXAMPLES DO NOT.

THE NEW JERSEY LEGISLATURE AUTHORIZED THIS MEDAL IN 1899, TO BE AWARDED FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE IN THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. THE MEDAL WAS ORIGINALLY AWARDED TO MEMBERS OF THE FOUR NEW JERSEY NATIONAL GUARD VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENTS (TOTALING AROUND 4,700 MEN). ALL FOUR NEW JERSY REGIMENTS SERVED AND COMPLETED THEIR SERVICE WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL US. IN 1900 AWARDS OF THIS MEDAL WERE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ANY VETERAN OF THE WAR IN OTHER UNITS/BRANCHES THAT SERVED AND HAILED FROM NEW JERSEY.
