Digitally Remastered Operations & Technical Manual

The RCA MI-4036 is part of RCA’s early Junior Velocity microphone line — the same classification that includes the well-known RCA 74-B.  This manual covers with detail the -k and -aa versions of this microphone class.

In RCA literature, these microphones were grouped as: “Junior Velocity Microphones” a designation used to classify or describe compact ribbon (velocity) microphones designed as a smaller, more economical alternative to full-size studio models such as the 44 series.

The manual contains a photo of the microphone, and gives detailed descriptions, specifications, applications, frequency response, and directivity curves. There are also parts diagrams and a parts list, as well as schematic diagrams. This information is invaluable in using vintage RCA microphones to best effect. Most of the original manuals have been lost. Now you can have something even better!  This is not an old original manual.

The digital remastering process is tedious. This manual is the result of a painstaking detail. (NOTE: Boy, was this "painstaking"; I worked on this manual for 6 months. Although the original was in good condition, the printing was so shoddy that 95% of all characters in the text had to be hand-edited to clean the raggedness up. The directivity diagram took 15 hours. It took more than 100 hours to restore this manual.) All tears, marks, stains, etc. are removed from the original manual, even printing defects are corrected. The text is brought back to original sharpness and detail, as are all of the illustrations.

Original RCA 74 - / Jr Velocity series microphones were in production from approximately 1935 - early 1940s when they were phased out. You can imagine that these original manuals provided with those microphones are scarce. If you can find one it was typically on thin stock, and therefore prone to fading and was printed with lower contrast than these remastered manuals. As I described above this particular manual had diagrams that were intricate and took much care to restore without altering the integrity of the engineering teams drawings.

We use heavy stock matte or premium glossy photo paper for the front and back covers, and heavy paper for the inside pages. The outside covers are protected by 10 mil thick, clear plastic sheets. It is then bound with plastic ring comb binding so the manual will open flat and be very durable.
