Original WWI-era postcard showing the "Basket Ball Squad, U.S.A. Base Hospital, Camp Merritt, N.J."

An excellent military and early sports image showing the Base Hospital basketball squad posed in two rows outside a building at Camp Merritt, New Jersey. The players wear period basketball uniforms with sleeveless jerseys, shorts, striped socks and athletic shoes, with a basketball prominently displayed at center.

Two uniformed U.S. Army servicemen stand at either side of the team.

The printed caption beneath the image reads:

"BASKET BALL SQUAD, U. S. A. Base Hospital, Camp Merritt, N. J."

Camp Merritt was an important U.S. Army installation during the World War I era, making this an appealing crossover collectible for WWI military, Camp Merritt, medical/hospital and early basketball collectors.

Reverse is unused and unposted and bears the publisher/printer identification along the left edge:

"S. K. SIMON, 226-242 William St., New York"

An interesting original WWI-era military sports postcard with an unusually strong, clearly identified subject.

Condition:

Very good vintage condition for its age. Image remains clear and detailed with good contrast. Expected age toning, with somewhat heavier toning to the outer border and light general edge and corner wear consistent with age. Creasing at the upper left corner and a small crease at the lower right corner.

Reverse is clean and unposted with expected age toning. No writing, address, stamp or postmark.
