Alco built 131 Century 420s between 1963 and 1969, powered by a 2,000 hp turbocharged 12-cylinder 251 prime mover; the short engine block gave the C420 its set-back cab and extended short hood. The Nickel Plate bought ten C420s in 1963, among the earliest built, and they went on to serve Norfolk & Western after the 1964 merger.
