This is another rarity from Dunhill that you just don't see very often as they didn't make very many of them! According to the "archives", the 501 first appeared around the late Patent era, maybe 1950 or so and was made until the late 1960's and then disappeared in the 1970's though I suppose you could say that's the case for just about every early shape as Dunhill introduced their five digit shape codes around that time. The Pot became the "06" shape, so this pipe's equivalent being a Group 3 would be a 3106 in today's portfolio and there's just something about the shape that is quintessentially English! At only 30g this pipe would make for a fantastic clencher, and it seems the mid 1960's was a great time for Root Briars! The bowl is somewhat squat with a touch of dual taper, thick walls and a hearty chamber Pots are known for. Transition is rather effortless to a sturdy round shank that extends to meet the original somewhat long vulcanite stem with straight bit and signature white spot. Finish is classic Root Briar, stunning indeed and again the birdseye here is absolutely magnificent completely covering the entire right side of the bowl with starburst exploding from the bottom of the left flank and radiates up into layers and layers of sweeping flame and cross grain! Clean throughout, this one promises a very fine smoking experience indeed.

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 18 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
