Vintage Nivada Taravana Alertamatic, Automatic Alarm, Turquoise Gradient Dial, Arabic Day-Date, 39mm Steel Cushion Case, 1970s, with Box

About this watch

A striking turquoise fumé dial and a mechanical alarm give this 1970s Nivada Taravana Alertamatic its distinctive appeal. The dial graduates from a pale mint centre to deep teal at the edge, with sculptural applied block markers, broad silver hands, a red arrow-tipped alarm hand and a framed day-date window at three showing the weekday in Arabic.

The approximately 39mm polished stainless-steel cushion case carries two crowns, one for the time and one for setting and winding the alarm, and a screw-down caseback. The watch is fitted with a substantial steel link bracelet with a Nivada shield on the clasp and comes with the Nivada presentation box shown.

Brand heritage

Nivada was founded in 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Otto Wüllimann, Hermann Schindler and Jakob Schneider. The brand became known for robust, practical tool watches in the 1950s and 1960s, including the Antarctic, the Depthmaster divers and the Chronomaster chronographs, and also explored complications such as wrist alarms.

The Alertamatic combined automatic winding with a mechanical alarm and a dual-crown layout; today it is one of the more uncommon vintage Nivada models.
