This fanciful, Tin Wind-Up Toy measures 8 1/2” long overall and 7 1/2” tall to the top of the roof of Humphrey’s “mobile home”.

    Wyandotte's "Humphrey Mobile" is taken from the Joe Palooka comic strip in the 1940's funny papers. It features Joe's friend Humphrey pedaling around his mobile outhouse which is mounted on a three wheel platform.

    This is a large Tin Wind-Up Toy with an articulated Humphrey out front. When the wind-up mechanism is activated, the cycle moves in a circle with Humphrey's legs pumping up and down on the pedals and his right arm and his beanie cap also moving up and down. Humphrey’s mobile “outhouse” style home features a door at the back that opens and closes and surfaces of the tin elements feature bright and colorful lithography. The Toy is copyright “Ham Fisher” (the creator of the Joe Palooka comic strip) and carries the Wyandotte mark on the roof of the house.

    This rare and quite wonderful “Humphrey Mobile” Tin Wind-Up Toy displays nicely but is in good condition only. The lithographed surfaces are generally well preserved with very little wear as can be seen in the scans below. The Toy retains Humphrey’s cap but lacks the small tin steering wheel on the bike in front of the figure and the plastic chimney on the roof of the outhouse. The tabs that attach the front and back ends of the toy are damaged and the two sections are attached / repaired with an adhesive. The Wind-Up mechanism is intact but needs to be adjusted for it to work properly. Overall this charming and rather delicate toy (for its size) displays nicely.
