Original and very rare, Lot of Four, ca1898 Alaska / Klondike Gold Rush Subject Cabinet Card Photographs.

These outstanding, period Card Mount, Vernacular-type Photographs each measure approx. 3 5/8” by 4 3/4” and are mounted on their original, buff colored Card Mounts (overall size of card mount is 4 ¼” by 5 1/4”).

These Photographs came to us with a group of Images on identical card mounts that appear to have been taken by a photographer who was traveling with a group of men and women in the Klondike region. Many of the Photos show members of the group and most all carry similar, short, manuscript titles on the mount below the Image. It has been suggested that this might have been a theatrical troupe as there are both men and women and everyone is fairly well dressed especially given the difficult terrain and environment in which they were traveling. None of the Photographs carry a photographer’s mark nor do any identify the group pictured in many of the Images. It appears that the Images were taken by a talented, amateur photographer that was traveling with the group.

Included here are the following original, Cabinet Card Photographs:

  1. Card Mount Photograph titled in manuscript on the mount “Hell’s Half Acre” picturing what appears to be a coastline almost obscured by the steam raising from a number of geysers. The Photograph is in very good condition - clean and crisp with sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality while the mount has some light soiling and light edge wear.
  2. Card Mount Photograph titled in manuscript on the mount “Small Geyser” and depicting the accumulated hill surrounding a geyser that can be seen smoking above the formation. The Photograph is in excellent condition - clean and crisp with sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality while the mount has some light soiling and light edge wear.
  3. Card Mount Photograph titled in manuscript on the mount “Muir Glacier” and picturing the massive face of this famous Glacier located in Glacier Bay. The Glacier wall rises 200ft+ above the bay and presents a formidable appearance. The Photograph is in very good condition - clean and crisp although although a bit light (likely a result of the original exposure of the negative) while the mount has some light soiling and light edge wear.
  4. Card Mount Photograph titled in manuscript on the mount simply “Formations” depicting what appears to be a large glacier or perhaps formations caused by heated springs / geysers. The Photograph is in very good condition - clean and crisp although with light, vertical streaks (likely a result of the original exposure of the negative) while the mount has some light soiling and light edge wear.
