My heart raced when I found this last weekend and then sunk when I looked a bit closer. This vintage Stanley No. 2 Bailey bench plane, strictly offered for parts, salvage, or restoration.
As shown clearly in the photos, the main cast-iron bed has a catastrophic break on one of the side walls (cheeks). The body casting is compromised and is not usable as-is. However, the rest of the plane consists of rare, completely original, highly sought-after Type 8 (circa 1899–1902) components in excellent, clean condition.
If you are looking to complete a Type 8 "franken-plane" or need rare No. 2 donor hardware, this is an incredible hoard of parts.
Component Breakdown & Condition:
- Cutting Iron / Blade: Features the highly collectible 1892 "Q Logo" stamp ("STANLEY / PAT. APL. 19, 92"). It is full length with a clean, unpitted face and plenty of life left.
- Frog Assembly: Genuine Type 8 frog featuring the distinct "B" foundry casting mark on the face. The lateral adjustment lever is straight and features the horizontal "PAT. STANLEY" stamping layout.
- Wood Handles: Stunning, original Brazilian/Honduras Rosewood (Dalbergia) knob. Includes the correct early "low knob" profile. The rear tote has been compromised. (see condition description)
- Lever Cap & Hardware: Clean lever cap with no cracks. Includes the original long toe rod, nuts, and frog mounting screws.
