This beautiful pipe appears to be an early Select grade and I would bet the farm one of the all-time "Greats" carved this pipe though hard to say whom. W.O. Larsen was THE premier Danish pipe shop from the 1960's on and at one point through the years almost every Great Dane carved for them and offered arguably some of the finest pipes ever made. Early we see the late great Sven Knudsen at the helm along with Poul Rasmussen who unfortunately passed at an early age. Sixten Ivarsson's pipes were also offered as well as Brakner in the early 1960's catalogs. Sven was pivotal in the success of not only Larsen but Danish pipes in general with many of his shapes being replicated for decades to come as favorites among many! Later we see Hans "Former" Nielsen become Foreman and pipes carved by Sven's brother Teddy as well as Peter Hedegaard, Tonni Nielsen, and the late Jess Chonowitsch to name a few. Ole Larsen recognized that many of the pipes they were producing displayed prized straight grain and a high grade designation was needed to market and price these pipes appropriately. They started at "F" and then 1-10 and later we see the "Pearl" and also "Birds Eyes". Benni Jorgensen made the majority of the later Straight Grains with Sven the earliest of them and even Lasse Skovgaard (Benni's son) towards the "end". This Select shows how the grade was not far behind though typically offers cross cuts to the briars many times as seen here with this gorgeous pipe! An octagonal Volcano/Brandy hybrid, it's really a fantastic shape and offers thick walls with a crisp rim opening to a hearty chamber. The 8 panels are awesome while the heel rounds out and to the rear a pronounced transition to a quarter bent sturdy round shank extends to meet the original somewhat long vulcanite downturned stem with signature "eye" shaped Larsen bit. Finish is a rich orange contrast with golden undertones while the grain shows off sweeping flame and swirling birdseye! An absolutely dazzling pipe indeed, this ones ready to enjoy!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 17 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
