Rowan survivors await medical care.
These survivors of the USS Rowan, a destroyer sunk in Italian waters September 11 as a result of an underwater explosion while taking part in the mainland invasion push, await medical attention in the sick bay of the rescue ship. They are smeared with oil and bloodstains.
The USS Rowan (DD-405) was a U.S. Navy destroyer that was torpedoed and sunk by a German E-boat off the coast of Salerno, Italy, on September 11, 1943
