Attica, Athens – AR Drachm
454–404 BC

Classical Athenian silver drachm featuring the famous Athena and owl types associated with one of the most important cities of the ancient Greek world.

Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing a crested Attic helmet.

Reverse: AΘE. Owl standing right with head facing; olive sprig to left; all within an incuse square.

Reference: Svoronos pl. 15, 19 ff. / Kroll 10 / HGC4, 1631

Weight: 4.12 g
Diameter: 14 mm

A desirable and considerably scarcer denomination than the famous Athenian tetradrachm. This example retains a recognizable helmeted portrait of Athena together with the iconic facing owl and portions of the AΘE ethnic.

Struck during the great classical period of Athens, when Athenian silver coinage circulated throughout the Mediterranean world.
