Jane Austen Northanger Abbey 1950 Doric Books Anthony Saris Illustrated DJ HC
A charming 1950 Doric Books edition of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, illustrated by Anthony Saris, with the wonderfully period Edmund Marein-designed dust jacket still present. Hardcover features decorative illustrated boards beneath the jacket. This copy also carries an earlier owner’s handwritten name/date, apparently “C. Thomas 1952.”
For the Austen collector who already has six copies of Pride and Prejudice and has finally admitted there may be other books. 🦩📚
Vintage pre-owned book showing age and use.
The dust jacket has considerable wear, including edge and corner wear, small tears/chips and losses, rubbing, scuffs/marks, discoloration and a noticeable missing area at the upper spine. The rear jacket also shows staining/scuffing and edge wear.
The hardcover beneath remains quite attractive, with its illustrated front board and decorative black spine. Boards show age-related rubbing and wear. Interior pages show normal age toning with scattered spotting/foxing visible in places. Former-owner writing dated 1952 is present on the front endpaper.
Binding appears intact in the photographs and the book remains quite presentable despite the jacket wear.
We have not individually collated every page, so we make no guarantee of absolute completeness beyond what is shown in the photographs.
📸 Please review all photographs carefully. What you see is what you get—the exact photographed book is the book you will receive. We do our best to photograph the good, the bad, the foxed and the occasionally bibliographically bewildering.
Jane Austen wrote Northanger Abbey as a wonderfully sharp send-up of Gothic novels, impressionable readers and the dangers of allowing one's imagination to gallop off without adult supervision.
Ethel considers that last problem completely unreasonable.
She has built an entire fulfillment operation around allowing her imagination to gallop off without adult supervision.
This 1950 Doric edition has exactly the sort of mid-century bookshelf personality we love: illustrated boards, period typography, a surviving dust jacket and enough honest wear to demonstrate that somebody actually read the thing instead of imprisoning it on a shelf for seventy-plus years.
Reasonable offers are welcome. Ethel understands that book collectors occasionally need to negotiate so they can explain to their households why another Jane Austen has arrived. Send us something sensible and we'll happily consider it. 🦩
📚 Combined shipping is welcome on multiple book purchases whenever practical. Books are shipped in a padded bubble mailer or box depending on size, weight and the protection needed for the individual item.
