Schillers Sämtliche Werke Band IV German Antique Book Reclam c1920 Schiller
🇩🇪 Friedrich Schiller — Schillers sämtliche Werke, Vierter Band (Volume IV), German-language historical writings, apparently the Reclam edition from circa 1920.
This is Volume IV only, containing historical works including portions of Schiller's history of the Thirty Years' War and the revolt of the Netherlands.
And we shall address the elephant in the library immediately:
This book is ROUGH.
Very rough.
The FFC has seen books with “character.” D_378 has character, witnesses, affidavits and apparently several previous attempts at life support. 😂📚
Still, it is an interesting old German Schiller volume printed in traditional Fraktur/blackletter type, and it survives as a genuine reading/reference/collection copy for someone who appreciates books exactly as history handed them down.
Author: Friedrich Schiller
Title: Schillers sämtliche Werke
Volume: Vierter Band / Volume IV
Language: German
Typography: Traditional German Fraktur / blackletter
Subject: Historical writings
Probable edition: Reclam edition, circa 1920
Format: Hardcover
The photographed sectional title pages identify:
Achter Teil — Geschichte des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs, 1.–2. Buch
(Part Eight — History of the Thirty Years' War, Books 1–2)
and
Zehnter Teil — Geschichte des Abfalls der Vereinigten Niederlande von der spanischen Regierung — Prozeß und Hinrichtung der Grafen Egmont und von Hoorne
The volume also includes an introduction to Schiller's historical writings.
A matching bibliographic listing identifies this Volume IV as parts 8–10, “Historische Schriften,” edited by Paul Merker and published by Philipp Reclam around 1920. ZVAB (DE)
Most people encounter Friedrich Schiller through drama, poetry and works such as William Tell, but Schiller was also deeply engaged with history.
This volume represents that other side of his work, including his major historical writing on the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) and the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule.
So yes, Ethel has accidentally wandered from antique-book processing into seventeenth-century European warfare.
Fred has wisely remained in Shipping. 🦩
This is a heavily worn, distressed antique/vintage book being sold as found.
Visible condition issues include:
The handwritten “1794” visible inside is an old notation only. It is NOT being represented as this book's publication date.
Likewise, the old handwritten lettering and markings on the cover and page edges are part of the book's history and are shown exactly as found.
We have not individually collated every page. Given the book's substantial age, wear and compromised binding, no guarantee of absolute completeness is made beyond what is shown in the photographs.
Please examine every photograph carefully.
What you see is what you get — the exact photographed D_378 book is what you will receive.
The protective storage bag, D_378 inventory label, ruler/photo aids and other photography materials are not included.
Lucy: “Ethel, the spine is basically gone.”
Ethel: “Yes.”
Lucy: “It has water damage.”
Ethel: “Also yes.”
Lucy: “Someone taped it together.”
Ethel: “A previous generation believed strongly in adhesive technology.”
Fred: “Should we call it distressed?”
Ethel: “Fred, the Thirty Years' War may have been easier on Germany than the last hundred years were on this book.”
😂📚🦩
But here's the thing—we don't hide the ugly stuff. We photograph it, describe it and let the next caretaker decide whether D_378 belongs in a collection, a research library, a restoration project, or simply on a shelf where a battered old German Schiller volume looks exactly right.
📦 Combined shipping is welcome. Books ship in a padded bubble mailer or box depending on size, weight and the protection required—and Ethel has already informed Fred that this particular veteran gets appropriate protection.
We are processing a much larger collection of antique and vintage books, and we're just scratching the surface. Check out our eBay store for more literature, history, old books, ephemera and the completely unrelated treasures that routinely wander through the Flamingo Fulfillment Center.
💰 Reasonable offers are welcome. This one has already survived water, tape, weakened hinges and approximately a century of human ownership. Ethel feels it has earned the right to negotiate its next address.
