Unimax Forces of Valor German Panzer IV - Kowel 1943

No. 80214 (Asst. 80000), Vintage year - 2005, Scale - 1:32

Unit - 4th Panzer Division - the division took part in the Battle of Kursk in July 1943 as part of Operation Citadel. The division served as part of the 9th Army Reserve, assigned initially to the Northern Pincer under Army Group Center (Gen. Walter Model's 9th Army) as an operational reserve unit. It was thrown into heavy combat sectors such as around Ponyri to support stalling assaults against deep Soviet defensive belts. After failing to pierce the deep Soviet lines, the division was forced to withdraw and engaged in heavy defensive battles around the Gomel area in Belarus before facing continuous Soviet pressure and eventual destruction near the end of the war in 1945.

Campaign - Kowel 1944 - in the spring of 1944, the 4th Panzer Division deployed to the Kowel area in occupied Poland/Ukraine to help relieve encircled German forces during the Soviet offensive. The Red Army forces had surrounded a German garrison in the strategic rail hub of Kowel. From March to early April 1944, the 4th Panzer Div. joined the 5th Panzer Div., the 131st Infantry Division and elements of the 5th Panzer Division Wiking to break the Soviet encirclement, succeeding on April 6. The Kowel sector sat on the boundary between Army Group Center and Army Group South, placing relief units under shifting tactical commands (between the 4th Panzer Army and the 2nd Army).
