History;
Hold it to the light before anything else. The gold face is not flat and not brushed but built from hundreds of tiny linked cells, a honeycomb pressed into the metal, so the colour shifts as your wrist turns and never quite settles.
Citizen kept that sort of dial for Exceed, the name it reserved for the watches meant to be given rather than merely bought. This one dates from the early eighties, when Japanese dress watches were at their thinnest and their most architectural, and the case shows it: a near-square with all four corners cut away into clean facets, half polished white metal and half warm gold, the bracelet growing straight out of the sides rather than hanging from lugs.
The details are where the money went. A gold crown capped with a small black cabochon. Applied gold batons instead of printed markers. A clasp bearing the Exceed mark, and a bracelet tapering so finely that the whole watch pours rather than sits.
It was built for a slim wrist and it stays that way - it closes small. Four decades later the honeycomb is still perfect, and it still catches the light exactly as it was designed to.
