A handsome complete six-volume edition of Macaulay’s classic History of England, edited by the distinguished Oxford historian C. H. Firth.

This is the substantial illustrated Macmillan edition, profusely illustrated throughout with portraits, historical scenes and other period material.

All six volumes are in their original matching dark blue publisher’s cloth bindings, with gilt titles and decoration to the spines. They make an impressive set on the shelf.

The books are approximately 110 years old and consequently show normal age-related wear, including some rubbing and marks to the cloth and some wear to corners and spine ends. The gilt lettering remains attractive and clearly legible.

Please note: Volume I contains extensive handwritten scholarly notes and observations by a previous owner, C. Harrison, including an ownership inscription dated Edinburgh, August 1933. These appear to be contemporary study notes relating to Macaulay and his historical writing. The other volumes are substantially cleaner.

Overall a very presentable and interesting complete set, suitable for a collector of English history, Macaulay, or attractive early-20th-century illustrated books.
