Originally published in 1828, the book became a massive success and underwent numerous reprints and revised editions, including a notable 1850 author's revised edition published during Irving's lifetime.  While sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Walter," the book was written by Washington Irving, the legendary American writer also famous for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle".  By 1850, Irving's biography was widely regarded as the definitive popular account of Columbus. Major publishers like George Routledge in London and others in America released beautifully bound,  revised editions during this time. It was the most widely read biography of Columbus in the English-speaking world for over a century. It heavily shaped the modern, romanticised public image of Columbus as a lonely visionary.  While Irving utilised real Spanish archival documents, modern historians note that he used significant "creative license". Most famously, Irving's book popularised the incorrect myth that medieval Europeans believed the Earth was flat and that Columbus had to prove it was round. Bohn. Full polished caramel coloured leather with understated six compartment spine. Two maroon morocco spine labels, both lettered in gilt. One label for the title and one for the actor and year of publication. Restitched with a new spine (including head and foot bands) applied utilising the original side covers. Externally smart, with very minor shelf wear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Book plate on front paste-down as a presentation for coming second in Maths in 1863.
