Great Antique Windsor Spectacles with Original Case, c1900

The Windsor-style eyeglasses were first produced in Britain during the Victorian era in the 1840s, reaching their peak popularity between the 1880s and the 1920s. They are also famously known as "John Lennon glasses" after the musician popularized them again in the late 1960s.

These distinctive frames are defined by their perfectly round lenses with celluloid coated rims and a saddle bridge, a curved nose piece designed to rest directly on the bridge of the nose without separate pads. They also have long, flexible wire temples that wrap around the ears to secure the glasses in place. The bridge is embossed ‘1/10  10 ct’ indicating that one tenth of the metal weight used is gold. The glass lenses are original and are without damage only some very minor surface marks. The arms are a little out of shape. There are a couple of paint splashes that I have not attempted to clean off. The glasses measure 11.2cm from edge to edge, the bridge measures 1.9cm.

The case is original to the spectacles. It is metal that has a black leather cover applied to the exterior. The case hinges open, the interior has a dark blue velvet lining and has a sticker in the lid with the owners details.

The case measures 12.6cm by 5.5cm.

The glasses are offered in good antique condition.

A great collectable.
