An exceptionally rare, authentic, unused 19th-century Victorian, "pop-up" style Valentine's Day greeting card, circa 1850/60. This premium example features a clear blind-embossed maker's mark for **MOSSMAN** along the bottom edge, on the left side, identifying it as a masterwork by the famous British paper artist and stationer David Mossman (1825–1901).
It is quite a small card, measuring approximately 6.5cm wide by 9cm tall.
The front ‘flap’ is an exquisite die-cut depicting a young boy and girl exchanging a love token, framed by a heavy floral and gilt (gold leaf) embossed border. The ‘pop up’ front is not on paper springs. When manually lifted or stood upright, the top flap pulls away from the backing to reveal a hidden layer of vibrant, colorful chromolithograph scrap flowers inside. The backplate is intricate geometric paper lace with a central oval and embossed corner florals. The upper ‘flap’ continues the gilt embossing to create swirls which surround a central oval, where roses surround a cartouche with the words ‘be mine’. The blue wavy design looks to have been done by hand with ink. We turn the card over to reveal a gilded, embossed panel, featuring embossed florals surrounding an empty oval cartouche where one would write a message or sign the card. This remains empty. CONDITION Condition is quite remarkable! There is some slight foxing to the left (see photographs). Also, some slight loss of die cut pieces here and there but this really does not detract from a stunning card!
