Prototype History

The Norfolk and Western TE-1 “Jawn Henry” was an experimental steam turbine locomotive built in the early 1950s as N&W explored alternatives to diesel power. Designed to deliver high horsepower for heavy coal service, the TE-1 combined a steam turbine with electric traction motors. Although powerful, the locomotive proved complex and expensive to maintain, and only one was built. It operated briefly in regular service before being retired, making it one of the most unique and short-lived locomotives in N&W history.
