Richard Petty's 1965 Outlawed Plymouth Barracuda A/FX Drag Car was a significant part of his brief but impactful drag racing career. After NASCAR banned the powerful 426-cubic-inch HEMI V8 engine for the 1965 season, Petty chose to skip the NASCAR season and instead entered the world of drag racing. His drag racing career began in late 1964, and he was known for his "Petty Blue" livery and the "43 JR." lettering on the doors of his car. The car was named "Outlawed" to protest NASCAR's decision. Despite the initial success, the drag racing career ended tragically when a broken front suspension caused the Barracuda to crash into the crowd during a race against Arnie Beswick on February 28, 1965. The accident resulted in the death of an eight-year-old boy and injuries to several others. Petty was devastated by the loss and ordered the car to be buried on his family property.
