The feature stamp on this hand drawn and individually hand painted all-over, super-scarce FDC, by Frans and Linda Geerlings, is the PO 1994 Federal Duck : the Red-Breasted Merganser high-denomination $15.00 stamps, Scott # RW-61.
About the inspiration for the feature
stamp: the Mergansers, commonly seen in the
southern coastlines of America, separate themselves from most breeds of
ducks in that their tapered bills have serrated edges, which makes catching
fish much, much easier than it is for most duck. (Because of this feature,
they are sometimes referred to as “Sawbill Ducks.”)
About the feature stamp. itself : this very visually pleasing stamp showcases a male (the duck with the primarily green head) and a female (the duck the brown head) as they get ready for a leisurely afternoon “stroll” on the surface of a serene lake.
About the combo stamp : for their combo, the Geerlings teamed up with the PO's 1991 Wood Duck stamp, Scott # 2482, from the PO's Flora and Fauna series,
About the hand painted cachet : using an expert array of captivating colors, the Geerlings catch us with a male and a female merganser a pair of spotlights a male and a female merganser who are enjoying some quality time with each other on a calm day when Mother Nature is showing off so much of her natural beauty and splendor
About the special cancellation : and for this cover, the Geerlings obtained a perfectly positioned, individually hand stamped cancel from our nation's capital.
About the Scarcity Factor : and as you could see by looking at this cover's lower-left-side corner. Only 30 of these hardly-ever-seen, masterful philatelic art-pieces were made. (And, I might add, with the exception of the Geerlings' one-of-a-kind cover, this particular Federal Duck cover is seemingly the scarcest of all of the Geerlings mainstream Federal Duck FDC.)
All in all, the Geerlings at their Very, Very Best.
