Rustic Cottage in English Wilderness Oil Painting Kate Amphlett 1889 Norwich Influence
ARTIST: Kate Amphlett, 19thC British School (Exhibited 1882 – 1889) SUBJECT: Expansive landscape, a rustic, olde-English cottage in moorland wilderness, has a feel of the Norwich School about this work MEDIUM: Oil on canvas SIGNATURE: Lower right DATE: Indistinctly dated, we believe 1889 SIZE: Visible painting 22 x 16.5cm(8.75 x 7.5 inches) PROVENANCE: British estate sale, private collection, from a large folio of antique works of art CONDITION: Good to fair, overall; the painting would benefit from a clean following years of display and storage. Minor dings and marks to the work do not detract. Previously restored (in antiquity) with a patch lower centre, affixed to verso with a little in-painting to the face of the work FRAME: Unframed FOR SALE BY AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE.
We present a charming rural landscape scene in oils, a farmstead cottage in the English wilderness. This is a painting by the British Victorian artist Kate Amphlett (exhibited 1882 – 1889). Amphlett was a prolific painting of rural landscapes working entirely in oils Her work is very reminiscent of the earlier Norwich School artists, from whom she drew inspiration. Presented in good to fair condition, unframed, in a suitable mount, this painting will look fabulous displayed
