Look at that shape, finish & grain!!!! If only I could go back in time, I would have loved to visit the Astley's shop on Jermyn St. in London as I heard it was incredible! Astley's was THE premier tobacconist and offered a wide array of pipes, tobacco and accoutrements. They had house pipes known as being some of the finest ever made and it's not surprising given the likes of Charatan, Dunhill, Ashton, Les Wood of Ferndown & James Upshall were the makers behind the scenes and some say even Comoy's and GBD. Normally I'm proficient with identifying who made a particular pipe from Astley's, but I am struggling with this one! You can usually tell by the stem, tenon, finish, shaping etc. but this one's tough. I'm leaning towards James Upshall, but it could well have been made by Bill Taylor of Ashton as well. Hard to say, but either way, you win! It's a phenomenal pipe made by a reputable old English maker and an absolutely stunning piece indeed regardless. A bent Billiard that's about a Group 5, it shows some Dutch Billiard to the profile as well with a tall somewhat cylindrical bowl sporting thick walls and a generous chamber. The transition is effortless yet pronounced to a chubby 3/4 bent shank that swoops up and meets the original vulcanite stem with fishtail bit and signature "A" logo. Finish is a gorgeous golden contrast and highlights the grain quite well displaying exquisite 360 degree layers and layers of straight and flame grain with the heel covered in swirling birdseye! Near mint, a chance here at a very fine pipe from Astley's that simply will not disappoint and comes with original gold lettering leather glove!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 17 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
