Zatopek emerged victorious in a dramatic last lap to defeat Mimoun, Herbert Schade, Gordon Pirie and Chris Chataway in an Olympic Record 14:06.6. Zatopek was a late entry for the Marathon Race yet was a convincing winner in 2 hours 23 minutes 04 seconds, a convincing victory by more than 2 minutes. Defending champion Delfo Cabrera finished 6th. Zatopek's treble gold medals in these events was and is considered one of the greatest feats in all of sport.
