1923 Signed Photograph of Mohawk Native American Chief Os-ke-Nonton (c.1888-1955). It is an original gelatin silver print photo of the chief and signed by him, 'To my friend W.C. Williams, Oskenonton, 1923 London',
Os-Ke-Non-Ton was a celebrated singer and performer who showcased his culture across the globe. He also worked as a healer at a spiritual centre in Lily Dale, NY, until his death. Os-Ke-Non-Ton introduced Indigenous culture to people all over the world. His work as a performer, healer and spokesperson has left a lasting influence on Indigenous arts, spirituality and culture.
I am unsure who W.C.Williams is, but it may be William Carlos Williams, American poet and physician. In his 1923 publication 'Spring and All' he explored themes of American identity, including the Native American experience, specifically the relationship between European settlers and Native Americans.
Framed behind glass, the photograph is in good condition, but it has silvered on the edges as expected with age. The mount card has some toning, but can be replaced. The frame has some wear and the backing board is coming away in one corner. The photo measures 42cm x 36cm in its from. The visible part of the photo behind the mount measures 28cm x 22.5cm.
