Superb original Mullard 53AVP photomultiplier tube, New Old Stock and retained with its original vintage Mullard packaging and documentation.

Of particular interest is the accompanying individual Mullard photomultiplier test/specification sheet, handwritten for this tube and recording measured characteristics including photocathode sensitivity, overall sensitivity and dark current.
The 53AVP is a substantial 11-stage, 44 mm photomultiplier with S11 spectral response. Period Philips/Mullard-family literature describes the type as using a caesium-antimony semitransparent photocathode with maximum spectral response at approximately 420 nm.
It was specifically intended for demanding scientific applications including scintillation counting of alpha, beta, gamma and neutron radiation, X-ray detection and optical instrumentation.
Period scientific literature also documents the use of Mullard 53AVP photomultipliers coupled to large plastic scintillators in particle/cosmic-ray detection systems.
This is an especially attractive example for a collector of early nuclear instrumentation or for restoration of period scientific equipment because it has survived with its original packaging and individual documentation.

The individual sheet appears to record 116 µA/lm photocathode sensitivity for this particular tube, together with further handwritten test results. I would leave those original figures visible in the photographs rather than trying to interpret every handwritten parameter in the description.
Condition
New Old Stock (NOS) – unused vintage laboratory stock.
The tube is in exceptional condition for its age and has remained with its original Mullard packaging and documentation.
Glass envelope, internal structures, base and pins all present extremely well.
The original outer cardboard packaging has considerable age/storage wear, old tape and some deterioration, as clearly shown. This does not detract from the excellent condition of the tube itself.
The original paperwork/test sheet shows age, folds and handling/storage marks.
Although this is NOS and unused, due to its age I have not electrically tested it and cannot guarantee its present measured performance against its original factory specifications.
