An unusual vintage XP1027 photomultiplier tube (PMT) from scientific research equipment, complete with the substantial cylindrical storage container shown.
The original storage container is clearly handwritten XP1027, and the physical construction of the tube is consistent with the Philips/Mullard XP10xx family of specialist photomultipliers.
This is a substantial head-on photomultiplier with a large photosensitive window, multi-stage internal electron multiplier structure and an unusual large multi-pin base incorporating a central coaxial output connection.
Closely related documented XP10xx types, including the XP1020 and XP1021, were specifically designed as high-speed photomultipliers for nuclear-physics applications and employed the same distinctive 20-pin base/central coaxial output arrangement.
The XP family encompasses specialist photomultipliers designed for applications including scintillation counting, nuclear physics, gamma-ray detection and fast timing.
I have been unable to locate sufficiently authoritative surviving technical data specifically for the XP1027, so I have deliberately avoided attributing specifications from the related XP1020/XP1021 to this tube.
Provenance
This photomultiplier was removed from scientific research equipment originating from facilities at either Harwell or Rutherford Laboratories, where it formed part of an important research project.
The tube was working when the equipment was decommissioned.
To the best of my knowledge this tube remains in fully working order; however, I am unable to test it with the specialist equipment required and therefore cannot guarantee its present performance.
If the buyer is not satisfied with the operation of the tube, I am happy to provide a full refund or, where available, replace it with an equivalent tube.

Manufacturer note: XP-series photomultipliers were produced within the Philips group and appear under Philips-associated brands including Mullard, Amperex and Valvo. The related XP1021 is documented as having been made under these brands. As there is no surviving manufacturer marking visible on this particular tube, I am not attributing this example specifically to Mullard or Philips.
Condition
Used vintage laboratory condition.
The glass envelope and large photosensitive window appear intact. The multi-pin base and unusual central coaxial connection are present as shown.
There are normal signs of previous laboratory use and age, including wear to the black external coating/shielding and storage container.
The cylindrical storage container is included and is handwritten XP1027. The identification is consistent with the construction of the tube, although I have been unable to locate original manufacturer documentation specifically for the XP1027 to independently verify its complete specification.
Working when decommissioned and believed to remain operational, but currently untested.
