Superb vintage Mullard XP1911 photomultiplier tube, complete with its original Mullard packaging, protective foam and individual factory/test specification sheet.

Although this example presents extremely well and looks almost unused, I can see minor indications of previous handling/use. It is therefore being conservatively offered as USED rather than New Old Stock.

The original box is clearly identified:

The accompanying individual specification/test sheet is also marked XP1911 and records measured performance information for this particular tube.

The Mullard XP1911 is a compact 10-stage head-on photomultiplier developed for demanding scientific applications including high-energy physics and scintillation counting. Mullard specifies a 19 mm tube diameter, useful photocathode diameter greater than 14 mm and a fast approximately 2.4 ns pulse rise time.

The type subsequently saw significant use in particle-physics instrumentation; for example, 1,934 XP1911 photomultipliers were used in the HERMES RICH detector’s photon-detection array.

Provenance

This photomultiplier came from scientific research equipment originating from facilities at either Harwell or Rutherford Laboratories, where it formed part of an important research project.

The tube was working when the equipment was decommissioned.

To the best of my knowledge this tube remains in fully working order; however, I am unable to test it with the specialist equipment required and therefore cannot guarantee its present performance.

If the buyer is not satisfied with the operation of the tube, I am happy to provide a full refund or, where available, replace it with an equivalent tube.

One thing I particularly like about this example is the paperwork. The sheet isn’t merely a generic instruction leaflet: it contains handwritten/measured parameters, which gives the buyer useful historical characterisation information for the individual tube. I would photograph that sheet clearly for the listing.

Condition

Used – exceptionally good vintage laboratory condition.

The tube presents extremely well and at first sight appears almost new. However, there are minor signs consistent with previous handling or use, so it is being conservatively and correctly sold as Used.

The glass envelope is clean and intact, internal structures appear excellent, and the pins are in very good condition.

Complete with its original Mullard box, internal packaging/protective foam and individual specification/test sheet. The outer packaging has normal age and storage wear.

Working when decommissioned and believed to remain operational, but currently untested.
