Original vintage Mullard 56AVP photomultiplier tube, clearly factory marked:

The tube also carries the identification number 86936 internally.

The 56AVP was a high-performance fast photomultiplier designed for demanding scientific instrumentation. Mullard’s technical literature specifies the 56AVP with a 44 mm S11(A) photocathode and 14-stage electron multiplier.

The type has a particularly strong history in nuclear and particle research. Published experimental work records 56AVP tubes coupled to NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals for gamma-ray measurements, while UK neutron research used Mullard 56AVPs with liquid scintillation detectors.

This example retains its substantial blue multi-pin base and the characteristic internal 14-stage multiplier structure is clearly visible through the glass.

Provenance

This photomultiplier was removed from scientific research equipment originating from facilities at either Harwell or Rutherford Laboratories, where it formed part of an important research project.

The tube was working when the equipment was decommissioned.

To the best of my knowledge this tube remains in fully working order; however, I am unable to test it with the specialist equipment required and therefore cannot guarantee its present performance.

If the buyer is not satisfied with the operation of the tube, I am happy to provide a full refund or, where available, replace it with an equivalent tube.

One particularly relevant UK research source describes neutron detectors using Mullard 56AVP photomultipliers, noting the tube’s 14 stages and operation in detector systems at approximately 2 kV.

Condition

Used vintage laboratory condition.

This is a previously used scientific photomultiplier and not New Old Stock.

The glass envelope appears intact and the internal structures are exceptionally clear. The blue base and pins are complete and show normal signs of previous use.

The black external coating around the upper and lower portions shows considerable age and wear, with uneven areas, old adhesive and surface deterioration visible. This is cosmetic and consistent with a tube that has previously been installed in scientific equipment.

Supplied with the plain cardboard storage box shown in the photographs. This is not being described as the original factory box.

Working when decommissioned and believed to remain operational, but currently untested.
