Rare & Delightful Vintage Victorian-Style Wax Doll by Joan Aitchison, 1981.

The Joan Aitchison is a skilled independent artisan and teacher who studied fabric and threads as part of her degree. In her artist biography, she notes that her initial creative specialization was centred on ‘Creative Work with Fabric and Threads’ She is a notable doll maker and artist recognized for creating high-quality, collectable Victorian-style wax dolls. She is also a well-known contemporary UK watercolour artist who runs art workshops specializing in landscape and nature painting, frequently utilizing specialized wax-resist art techniques. While she has shifted much of her focus in recent years toward vibrant watercolor painting and community workshops, her early foundation in fibre arts makes her older, handcrafted textile and doll pieces uniquely collectible items.

The handwritten tag attached to the dolls wrist reads ‘THIS IS A WAX VICTORIAN CHILD 1900, MADE BY JOAN AITCHISON. 1981’

This is a wax shoulder-head doll, dating to 1981. Dolls of this type feature a distinctive molded face with hand-painted details, set eyes, and a brunette mohair or human hair wig. They typically have a stuffed cloth body clothed in period-appropriate attire, such as the collared dress seen here. Based on its visual style, it shares close characteristics with classic European papier-mâché or poured wax/composition creations.

This doll utilizes the popular German technique used between 1850 and 1880, of dipping a pre-moulded composition or papier-mâché base into a layer of hard wax. This composite process provided structural durability while granting the face a smooth, lifelike, and translucent skin-like finish. It features hand-painted facial features including brown eyes, arched eyebrows and slightly tinted lips, and a realistic mohair or human hair wig, I am uncertain which it is. Her hands are also modelled in wax.

This example is dressed as a Victorian child. The doll is dressed in a historically accurate period outfit. It includes a dark blue, long-sleeved floral dress layered beneath a crisp white bib pinafore apron with broderie anglaise detailing. She has multiple petticoats and bloomers beneath her dress. The doll has thick dark stackings and leather ankle boots.

The doll measures approx. 47cm tall.

The doll has a scuff on one cheek and to her nose. There is some staining to her apron.

Joan Aitchison wax dolls are considered quite rare. These highly scarce dolls are highly sought after by vintage toy collectors who appreciate the skilled, delicate craftsmanship of replica wax doll making. They were independently produced in very limited numbers, meaning you will rarely find them available to purchase.
