Description

About This Items

  1. A large antique-style Chinese lacquered bamboo ceremonial carrying basket, estimated to date from the early 20th century.

The basket is constructed from woven bamboo and decorated with black and red lacquer together with extensive gilt bird, flower and plant motifs.

The lid features a prominent central bird-and-flower composition, while decorative gilt designs continue around the sides of the basket.

The basket retains its traditional three-part construction:

    • Removable lid
    • Middle storage section
    • Lower storage compartment
    • Fixed carrying handle

This form is closely related to traditional 提籃 / 盛籃 baskets associated with Southern Chinese, Fujian and Taiwanese ceremonial culture. Similar types were traditionally used for carrying food, gifts and other items during weddings, festivals and family celebrations.

The precise geographic origin of this individual example cannot be confirmed, so the regional attribution should be regarded as stylistic.
