Spring Gardens at Somersby Tennyson’s Birthplace Oil Painting Lillian Codd 1976
ARTIST: Lillian Codd, mid-20thC British School ,northern artist SUBJECT: Gardens at Somersby Rectory in springtime MEDIUM: Oil on board SIGNATURE Indistinctly, lower right (obscured); ascribed by the artist to a label, verso DATE: Dated 1976 SIZE: Visible painting 38 x 28 cm (15 x 11 inches), Frame 47 x 37cm (18.5 x 14.5 inches), Depth 4cm (1.5 inches) PROVENANCE: British estate sale, private collection, back to the artist, labelled verso CONDITION: Very good for its age, might benefit from a light clean but well presented in its frame FRAME: Original, but basic frame, shows light age-related wear: this painting would benefit from a mount to a higher standard
We present a charming landscape painting in oils, the gardens at Somersby Rectory, the birthplace and early home of the British poet Alfred Lord Tennyson (British 1809 – 1892) The painting, dated 1976, is by a British northern-school artist, Lillian Codd: unknown to us but a very competent hand. The painting shows much depth and perspective, capturing the magnificence of the estate’ grounds in spring.
