ARTIST: Zimmermann, mid-20thC Continental School, north-European, possibly German? SUBJECT: An expansive winter landscape with figures walking in the forest MEDIUM: Oil on dark-wood panel SIGNATURE: Lower right SIZE: Visible painting 40 x 29cm (15.5 x 11.5 inches), Frame 53 x 42cm ( 21 x 16.5 inches), Depth 6cm (2.25 inches) PROVENANCE: British estate sale, private collection, from a large folio of works of art after several years of storage CONDITION: Very good FRAME: Original frame shows moderate to heavy age-related wear with several pieces of gesso missing: in a genuine condition following years of storage FOR SALE BY AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE.
We present a super quality expansive landscape painting in oils, am ethereal scene with figures, in winter snows, walking in forest by a game-ranger’s cottage. The painting is just signed Zimmermann. Mid-20th C Continental School artist, northern European, possibly German in our opinion. Several artists show on records with the same surname and despite extensive research here, we have not identified the artist farther. Given the quality of this work, well worth researching further. Presented in very good overall condition in its original frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed
