Description Vintage 5-inch photomultiplier head unit/base assembly, designed for use with a large photomultiplier tube (PMT).
The PCB is specifically etched on the underside:
“5 inch photomultiplier head unit. DAN. 3:5:84”
The assembly incorporates the large multi-contact PMT socket together with a resistor network forming the photomultiplier dynode voltage-divider chain and additional discrete electronic circuitry.
Photomultiplier head assemblies of this type were used with large PMTs in scientific, nuclear/radiation detection, scintillation counting and other low-light measurement instrumentation. The precise original instrument or application for this particular unit is not known.
An interesting surviving piece of 1980s British laboratory/scientific instrumentation.
