Scott Chambers “America³” 1992 Handcrafted Half-Hull Yacht Model – Signed

Handcrafted half-hull model of America³ (America Cubed), the victorious 1992 America’s Cup defender, by noted American marine model maker Scott Chambers (b. 1949).

Chambers comes from a family with a shipbuilding tradition extending more than 120 years and began creating half-hull models professionally in 1973. A graduate of Central Washington State University, he specializes in historically accurate sailing-vessel half hulls constructed from plans and line drawings using traditional methods and hand tools. His work is represented in yacht clubs, private collections and the Peabody Essex Museum.

America³ (USA-23), pronounced “America Cubed,” was the Bill Koch/­­Buddy Melges syndicate yacht that won the 1992 Citizen Cup and successfully defended the America’s Cup against Italy’s Il Moro di Venezia V.

The reverse of the mounting board is additionally hand signed “by Scott Chambers 1992.”

Model is mounted on a substantial finished hardwood plaque/backboard with beveled molded edge and an integral recessed hanging groove on the reverse.

Measurements: ship approximately 25" long × 2 3/4" maximum projection/depth; mounting plaque approximately 28" × 8". Overall weight approximately 4 lb. 8 oz.

Condition: Offered exactly as found, with no restoration or repairs attempted and only a very cursory surface cleaning. The applied graphics/decals show age-related lifting and peeling in areas, particularly within the eagle motif; the lifted portions remain present but are fragile. There is loss/damage to portions of the “America³” graphic, a small ding/chip to the lower right area of the hull, and additional scattered scuffs, smudges, marks and minor finish wear consistent with age and display. Mounting plaque also shows scattered surface wear. Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.

No attempt will be made to re-adhere, flatten, restore or otherwise alter the lifting graphics. The model will be carefully packed with particular attention to protecting these fragile raised decal edges during shipment.
