Description
This is a veteran, "Fünf" or Five Schilling note from the restored, second, "Republic of Austria." Dated September 4, 1945, it is from the first post-war issue. World War II had ended in May and at this time Austria was occupied by the Four Allied Powers, the United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and France.
On March 12, 1938 German troops had invaded and annexed Austria and it had ceased to exist as a separate nation. After Nazi Germany was defeated, Austria was reborn but prostrate. In 1945 and 1946 the United States helped counter starvation with emergency food supplies delivered by the US Army. The allied military occupation finally ended in 1955.

Face: No serial number. • Wien (Vienna) 4 September 1945. • Blue or violet on gray-green underprint. • Designed as an "ideal young man's head," medical doctor Hans von Brücke was the model.

The Note: A long-used specimen, it has fairly serious edge tears at the centerfold, some other smaller tears, and some small pinholes. It will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it. I grade it Fine or lower, BUT, as grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.

We ship the day after cleared payment. Payment in US funds only please. Returns: Accepted, in original condition, in most cases and encouraged if the item has been misdescribed.
