Minolta MD 85mm f2 manual focus lens, film-tested - REK84

(please ignore the 'REK84' in the auction title, it is to identify a subset of items being sold)

This lens was introduced around 1980. It is a 6 element, five group design with a six-bladed aperture. It accepts 49mm filters. The serial number of this example is 8009190.

Per japb.net, this can be characterized as the "MD III (1981–1984)" variant. This line offered a small tab to lock the aperture ring at minimum aperture, which allows it to work with the auto-exposure features of cameras of that era.

Test photos: The star sculpture was shot at f/2, f/4 and f/8. The house was shot at f/8 and the leaves at f/4. Ilford FP4+ developed in HC-110.

The lens glass shows extensive light internal dust and/or speckling, and one very small bright spot near edge of one internal element. There are no signs of fungus, cleaning marks or scratches.

Focus and diaphragm controls are very smooth. The 6-blade aperture is symmetrical through range, diaphragm blades are clean and dry, auto-diaphragm action quick and responsive. Filter threads are clean, and a 49mm filter mounts easily.

Included are a clip-on plastic Minolta lens cap, matching Minolta lens hood, Minolta 49mm L35 (UV) filter, and a Minolta snap-top leather-ish padded case. which shows very little wear and has two sturdy strap lugs. Lens hood clips on to lens in reversed position for storage, though its grip seems a bit light -- it stays on securely with the lens cap on, though.

This item is not part of the Argus Museum collection.
