Flowers for Algernon began as Daniel Keyes' celebrated 1959 short story, which won the 1960 Hugo Award, and was later expanded into the 1966 novel that won the Nebula Award for Best Novel. The story is told through the progress reports of Charlie Gordon, a man with an intellectual disability who undergoes an experimental surgical procedure intended to dramatically increase his intelligence.
As Charlie's abilities grow, so does his awareness of himself and of the people around him. Experiences and relationships he once understood only dimly take on new meaning, while the laboratory mouse Algernon, who underwent the same experimental treatment, provides an increasingly troubling indication of what may lie ahead. Keyes uses Charlie's changing language and writing as an integral part of the story, allowing the reader to experience his intellectual development directly through his own words.
The novel has remained in print for decades and has been adapted repeatedly for stage, television and film, most famously as the 1968 movie Charly, for which Cliff Robertson won the Academy Award for Best Actor. At its center, however, the book remains a very personal story about intelligence, memory, dignity, friendship and the consequences of altering something as fundamental as the human mind.
This 1995 Easton Press edition presents Keyes' novel in the publisher's traditional full-leather format, with gilt decoration, raised spine bands, gilded page edges, moiré endpapers, sewn pages and a permanent satin ribbon marker.
