Name:  NWA 15758

Classification: CK6

Weight:   14.16g

Description:  Meteorite with a polished face.

Provenance:  I am the main mass holder so you have perfect provenance.

Process:  Cut and/or polished using distilled water

Collector's Notes:  An interesting presentation of this rare class. The softer matrix wears quicker in the sandy desert wind exposing the remnant chondrules until they are released or then themselves worn away. There are some occasional larger well formed black-grey chondrules found in the material. The polished face reveals highly altered chondrules in a dark matrix.  There is a nice crusted face with contraction cracks.  Another area has a freshly fragmented face which shows a more natural presentation of the matrix.  This piece has a little bit of everything.

Classification Information:  Abundant recrystallized matrix with plagioclase and magnetite abundant chondrules.  The moderately weathered find is a beautiful presentation of CK6, with the small pieces being visually strong collection pieces.  Some of the pieces have remnant crust in pretty good condition but for the most part the soft material presents as deeply carved by the desert wind.  The metbul has this as "1" piece, which is incorrect.  It is many small pieces that may have been a larger single stone.  That is my bad for communicating this poorly during the process.

Class information:  CK6 meteorites are members of the CK (Karoonda-type carbonaceous chondrite) group that have experienced intense thermal metamorphism on their parent asteroid. Unlike many carbonaceous chondrites, CK meteorites are highly oxidized and contain abundant magnetite, with very little metallic iron. As petrologic type 6 specimens, CK6 chondrites have undergone extensive recrystallization and chemical equilibration, causing most original chondrule textures to become blurred or nearly erased. Their combination of primitive carbonaceous chemistry and strong thermal alteration makes them important for studying how heating processes modified early Solar System materials inside carbon-rich asteroids.
