Name:   NWA 16525

Classification: Eucrite-mmict

Weight:   26.44g

Description:  Meteorite with lightly polished faces. Plank cut part slice. It is a Jikharra 001 pair.

Provenance: I am the main mass holder so you have perfect provenance

Process: Cut and polished with distilled water.

Collector's Notes: This book-mark shaped part slice it a great example of the material because it starts at the bottom with a large clasts that butts up agains a "flowing" melt area which contains smaller clasts that were pretty much "frozen" in place before becoming fully melted.  It is like a story as you read if from one end to another.  I like to think about how every stone tells a story with meteorites telling us the biggest story of them all.  This piece then gives clarity to that story.

It is not a perfect polish.  I might be being picky, but I have been struggling on the final steps for this material.  This means you may see some saw marks/grind marks. I would say it is an 800 to 1200 grit finish. I tried to capture it all in the pics.  I might be being hard on myself but I am into full disclosure.  I know what it is like to get something unexpected on an incoming met.

Class information:  Eucrites are achondritic stony meteorites belonging to the HED (Howardite Eucrite Diogenite) clan that we can say with high confidence originated from asteroid 4 Vesta. They consist predominantly of calcium-poor pyroxene, pigeonite, and calcium-rich plagioclase, representing the basaltic crust.  Non-cumulate eucrites often occur as regolith breccias formed near the surface, while the rarer cumulate types crystallized in deeper magma chambers. A further subdivision among the breccias are monomict (comprised of a single lithology) or polymict (assemblage of multiple lithologies).  As the most common achondrite group, eucrites preserve direct records of igneous differentiation and magmatic processes on a differentiated asteroid, making them important for reconstructing early Solar System's evolution.
