The debut novel by acclaimed Black filmmaker, playwright and novelist Bill Gunn. The semi-autobiographical story follows Barney Gifford, a young Black man from Philadelphia navigating coming-of-age, his sexuality, and his pursuit of acting fame in New York City.

It is considered a rare, classic work of African American literature.
