North London Railway luggage label, in condition as shown
The North London Railway was the title adopted in 1853 intead of
it’s previously long winded name and it reached its own terminus at Broad
Street in 1865. It was operated by the LNWR who took over in 1909 and finally
merged with them in 1922. NLR labels measure approx. 95mm x 50mm and the later
ones approx. 90mm x 40mm with some size variations
Pre-grouping railway labels from England, Wales & Scotland date from before January 1923, when the GWR became larger and the LMS, LNER & SR were formed from an amalgamation of Companies in their area of operation. In turn these Companies were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to form British Railways. Stock codes may be shown, sometimes the quantity printed and if a date is shown, eg: 2-98, 1/23, it signifies the month & year of printing or if 16-7-95, the day also, in the 19th or 20th century
