This is a remarkably scarce matching set of four late-Victorian 19cm salad or dessert plates in the highly collectible Saxon pattern, manufactured by Clementson Bros at their Phoenix Works in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Produced between 1891 and 1910, these plates feature a gorgeous English ironstone interpretation of the traditional Japanese Imari palette, displaying rich underglaze cobalt blue, vibrant overglaze iron red, and fine gold gilt accents. While large dinner plates or serving tureens in this pattern occasionally surface, intact groups of this smaller 19cm size are exceptionally elusive on themarket today. Each plate shows excellent production consistency, including the exact same crisp, molded concentric rings across the base that were left by the original factory shaping machinery over a century ago.The overall condition of this antique set is exceptional for its age. All four plates are completely structurally intact and free of cracks, chips, or structural glaze crazing, meaning the protective glass-like glaze layer remains entirely smooth, shiny, and sealed. There is beautiful natural patina inthe form of age-related yellow discoloration. This faint yellowing is trapped entirely deep beneath the sealed surface glaze, running in light rings where the plates naturally rested against each other during long-term storage or tracking along the raised factory-molded grooves on the reverse. The vibrant red and blue patterns remain sharp, and the delicate gold gilt detailing shows minimal handling wear.
