The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a massive German commercial passenger rigid airship. Built by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, it measured 245 meters (804 feet) long and was filled with flammable hydrogen. It famously caught fire and was destroyed on May 6, 1937, at Lakehurst, New Jersey, ending the era of commercial airship travel.

Operational History
  • First Flight: March 4, 1936
  • Service: Provided scheduled commercial transatlantic service between Europe and North America.
  • Milestones: Successfully completed numerous long-distance flights, including scheduled runs to North America and South America before its final voyage.
The Disaster
  • Date & Location: May 6, 1937, at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA.
  • Incident: Burst into flames during a docking maneuver, burning completely in less than a minute.
  • Casualties: 35 people died out of 97 on board (13 passengers, 22 crewmen), plus one ground crew fatality.
  • Cause: Widely attributed to an electrostatic spark igniting a hydrogen gas leak, though the exact trigger remains a subject of ongoing historical study.
