Picture jasper is an opaque, fine-grained variety of microcrystalline quartz, usually classified as jasper. Its distinctive cream, tan, brown, reddish, and gray patterns can resemble landscapes, wood grain, mountains, or abstract scenes. These markings form from mineral impurities—especially iron and manganese oxides—deposited in silica-rich sediments or volcanic materials before and during silicification. Picture jasper commonly occurs in sedimentary environments and is found in regions including the United States, Mexico, Madagascar, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia, and parts of Africa.

In metaphysical traditions, picture jasper is associated with grounding, stability, connection to nature, and reflection. It is often believed to promote patience, inner peace, creativity, and a deeper appreciation of the Earth, while its landscape-like patterns are sometimes used as aids for meditation and visualization. Some people regard it as a stone of storytelling and ancestral connection. These metaphysical properties are spiritual beliefs and have not been scientifically proven.
